in collaboration with Aravinth Panchadcharam, Annie McKinnon, Tank Thunderbird and Heloisa Antonia Franco.
Produced by VIVID and Connecting Cities
2015

The Heart of the City  is an interactive public art sculpture that pulses light according to the heart beat of the people. The sculpture invites several people to sit and interactive with it.
The piece aims to bring closer the heartbeat of the citizens by creating a heart to the city where people could hang out and experience an expansion of their own heart shared with others.
The work was presented in VIVID Sydney 2015. From 22th May – June 8th.

Work in collaboration with Aravinth Panchadcharam, Annie McKinnon, Tank Thunderbird and Heloisa Antonia Franco.
Commissioned by VIVID SYDNEY 2015 and hosted by UTS Creativity and Cognition Studios in Sydney.

We will show the detailed production steps as below.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN

Drawing

MODEL

The shape of the sculpture comes from an original human heart model that I modified to get the desired shape for the project. The sculpture will fit several people at the same time. It will have only one pulse sensor located in one of the seats that will pulse the light of the entire sculpture on and off. It can only be activated by one person at a time. The sculpture surface will be 10 m2. The structure will be robust, waterproof, durable and its shape will be adapted and can be scaled according to the space around it.

CERAMIC MAQUETTE

It has one pulse sensor located in the center of the sculpture where people insert the finger and the sculpture pulses red light on and off according to the heart beat of the user. Half of the cables pulses acording to the right artery and the other half with the left artery.
The cables evolving the sculpture are LED NEON FLEX color red . The sculpture is robust, waterproof and durable.

CIRCUIT DESIGN

Internal structure and electricity
The interior structure was made with Styrofoam and fiberglass. Electronics, power supply and a fan was located in the middle of the sculpture inside a wood box. There are 2 cables to turn on and off the work. Each cable needs 10 amp electric power.

MATERIAL

Styrofoam structure:Internal structure was made with Styrofoam and a layer of fiberglass with resin. It was developed in the Design lab of UTS, University of technology Sydney from April 18th until May 22th, 2015.
